Legend (because everything in Arizona is legend) says that over a hundred years ago a group of folks had themselves a real nice picnic out in the desert on Independence Day. They had such a nice time, they named the spot they lunched on after the holiday, and thus was born Fourth of July Butte (and its accompanying Fourth of July Wash). Its a nice story, and I like to imagine that those folks made it home after their picnic, and didn't end up lost in the desert somewhere.... but honestly? With maps and GPS, we had a hard time finding this damn place. How they did it over a hundred years ago, I have no idea.

Our goal was to do some rockhounding in the area, for agates and chalcedony. Unfortunately, since it took us so long to find the spot, we were running out of daylight by the time we got down to business. We scouted quickly, did some digging, and got a few nice pieces... and then we headed back to civilization.

The good news is that now we know how to get there! And I hope that we get a chance to explore the area again, when we have a bit more time.
